More than 2,500 smallholder farmers make up the Rianjagi Cooperative Society, bringing us this Washed Kenya. The Rianjagi Coffee Factory is located in Embu on the eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya, near Kirinyaga and Nyeri, two of Kenya’s best-known coffee regions. The co-op is made up mostly of women, who are largely responsible for maintaining the region’s high-quality coffees.
While coffee and tea are the region's primary cash crops, farmers also grow bananas, beans, potatoes, avocados, macadamia, and mango trees to increase food and income security. These additional crops provide natural shade for the coffee and preserve biodiversity.

Coffee Bio
The coop cultivates the renowned SL28 and SL34 varieties. The SL28 in particular was developed in the 1930s and is one of Kenya’s most celebrated coffees. It is more susceptible to disease, but the extra care is worth it to produce the high-quality, juicy, and vibrant flavors the SL28 is known for.
