This is another exceptional coffee brought to us by Beneficio San Vicente, an exporter that has featured many coffee lovers’ favorite producers, including Sandra Trochez, Osmin Reyes, and Arturo Paz, to name a few. This time, we are being treated to a wonderfully complex Washed Parainema variety produced by Otilio Leiva.

About 40 years ago, Otilio began shifting his focus from sugarcane to coffee production. He was motivated to plant one hectare of coffee by a National Forest Institution project, as they promised to provide him with agricultural resources and training. After that first harvest, Otilio realized his passion for coffee. Eventually, with support from the San Vicente crew, he began producing specialty-grade coffee that Spyhouse has been proud to feature over the years.

The Parainema variety was originally developed in Honduras by IHCAFE (Instituto Hondureño del Café). It is a hybrid with both robusta and arabica genetic components bred to be resistant to certain diseases and insects. The beans produced are large and can be grown at surprisingly low altitudes for specialty coffee.
