Hafi Natural Lot #9 / Burundi – Beans That Benefit
Key Lime / Strawberry / Praline
This naturally processed Burundi coffee comes from deep in the northern province of Muyinga. These coffee cherries were grown by many farmers whose farms are a six-hour drive from Bujumbura and brought to the relatively new Hafi dry mill. Before its construction in 2021, the local farmers brought their harvested coffee cherries to the nearest wet mill 20km away. Thus, it earned the name Hafi meaning “close” in Kirundi. Hafi is managed by a collective of 2,000 farmers who have extensive experience processing their coffee at other mills in the region. Currently, they are limited to only producing natural coffees until construction on the wet mill finishes in the coming years.
This coffee marks the beginning of Spyhouse’s relationship with JNP Importers, who not only specialize in sourcing excellent coffee from Burundi, but also in effective partnership with the farmers and communities they work with. JNP was started by Jeanine Niyonzima-Aroian to cultivate strong partnerships in her home country of Burundi through education about coffee cultivation practices, profit sharing, and most notably, gender equity initiatives. Women in Burundi still lack full property ownership rights and have less access to education. JNP seeks to disrupt these norms by directly paying women for their work in coffee and providing them with financial literacy resources.
More About Beans That Benefit
By buying this bag, you are a part of a groundbreaking new ethical pricing project that supports education for young women in Burundi. 12% of the retail price for every bag you purchase will fund a period justice project that helps young women in Burundi access safe menstrual products and stay in school. 70.2% of young women in Burundi miss an average of 5 days of school each month – a whole week! – because they do not have access to safe period products.
Organized by the new ethical pricing project, Beans That Benefit, and facilitated by the Burundian nonprofit, Abarundikazi Period Movement, this project will train at least 10 young women to start small businesses sewing and selling reusable fabric pads. The women will receive sewing machines, materials, and training to make and use reusable pads and will be able to start their own small businesses making and selling pads to their communities and beyond. Creating sustainable, income-generating businesses will help young women stay in school and succeed. More education for women is proven to lead to a decrease in child marriages, better incomes for families, and brighter futures for many young women. And all because you purchased this coffee!
