The Kilimbi washing station sits on the beautiful shores of Africa’s Great Lake Kivu. Because the facility is nestled among several steep mountains, the easiest path to the washing station for most of the region’s coffee growers is by boat, making Kilimbi one of the most unique processing centers in the world. In addition to its location, Kilimbi stands out in its reputation for phenomenal quality. Their coffees have been featured in regional and international barista competitions and it even won a Cup of Excellence award in its first year of operation.

Coffee Bio

Our partners at Higa Coffee connect us to excellent washing stations like Kilimbi in Rwanda and Nyagishiru in Burundi. Year after year, they share some of the best coffees we see all year from eastern Africa, and this year is no exception. We were thrilled with this year’s fully washed lot from Kilimbi as it showcases our favorite hallmarks of what makes Rwandan coffee so special. It has a rich complexity, featuring the sugary sweetness of dried fruit grounded by an earthy note of black tea. It is lifted by sparkling acidity reminiscent of a juicy cherry tomato in the summer.
