Villatoro Matías carries a heavy load of ripe red apple and a deep, winelike essence that calls Syrah to mind. These fruit tones are supported by notes of chocolate, almond, and seasonal spices. This coffee is a wonderful representation of the more refined examples of the classic Huehuetenango profile we are seeing come forward in this new era. It is the perfect coffee to share with loved ones throughout the Holiday Season as we look back on traditions and with hope in our futures.

Los Dos Socios is a small farm located near the village of El Chalum, La Libertad, just a mile from the Mexican border in Guatemala’s Huehuetenango. The entire farm is roughly seventeen acres, each with just 226 coffee trees. This is historically one of the most well-known coffee regions in the world, however, it is undergoing a bit of a renewal. Leaf rust, a fungal infection, devastated the 13/14 harvest cycle, forcing the government to declare a state of emergency in the coffee sector and implement major renovation projects throughout the country. These changes made room for new producers to come forward and fill some gaps as they found new confidence in the changing market. It is a hopeful time in Guatemala as we see farmers like Villatoro Matías step into new opportunities.
