Karuthi begins with flavors of dried cranberry and orange zest aromatics. As the cup cools, it further develops into rich chocolate notes with a present spiciness that together reminds us of Aztec cocoa. This coffee is very dynamic, but the varied elements work together in a way that allows you to return to this coffee day after day. It is the perfect coffee to bring some light to these darker, cold winter mornings.

Karuthi is one of the nineteen washing stations that make up the Othaya Farmer’s Cooperative Society. Although this is the first time we have featured this particular mill, we have worked with the larger group each year, carrying the Gatuyaini and Gichichi factories in the past. Coffees from Othaya town have been the favorite Kenyan coffees we see year after year. The area produces coffees that are incredibly complex and dynamic, but rooted in clear, fruity sweetness that allows them to be enjoyable, cup after cup.
The Karuthi factory has around 400 members, each averaging only 250 trees. They plant their trees intermixed with other crops to increase their financial stability and biodiversity. The mill is located between two rivers, providing water to the station along the road to Nyeri, right outside Othaya town.
