Raspberry, Almond, Riesling
Saraguro, Southern Ecuador
Every roaster has a list of stories that emphasize the uniqueness and individuality of the producers they work with– yet these often get inflated and hairs get split because these stories are generally very similar. We exaggerate very little with this story, because Juan Peña and his coffees are truly unique. Most notably, he is a first generation coffee producer. Unlike most producers who have had farms passed down through many generations, Juan chose to plant coffee just a few years ago. As a multi-disciplinary horticulturalist, primarily specializing in ornamental roses, he was able to apply a unique approach to coffee cultivation based on his background with many other crops. Additionally, from Juan's exceptionally high farm there is no other coffee in sight. He is the sole coffee producer in his region. It is unheard of for a first generation producer with no other coffee grown around him to be producing a coffee this exceptional on only his second ever harvest.
Juan Peña's black honey micro lot is exploding with notes of dark berries, almonds, and fresh yogurt with a finish similar to riesling. This coffee not only shows that Ecuador has great potential, but proves that there are already amazing coffees to be found there. It is the perfect coffee for embracing fresh experiences.
