The washing station operated by the Gachatha Farmer Cooperative Society has annually produced some of our favorite Kenyan coffees and we are proud to release this as our first of two lots from the group this year. The group currently supports 900 active farmer members, each averaging 200 trees. Located near Othaya in Nyeri County, the coop is situated in the foothills of Mt. Kenya, part of the Aberdare mountain range. Tea and coffee are found growing side by side here in the rich, bright orange soil. This highly nutrient rich soil, local varietals, and unique processing methods have made Nyeri coffees exceptionally famous. The area surrounding the Gachatha mill is densely populated, so every effort is made to minimize impact. The factory treats all water in soak pits to ensure no contaminates run into the local waterways, which are a source for drinking water. The community also places great importance on protecting the indigenous trees that remain in the area, so that the local bird life can be sustained.
Gachatha has incredible complex fruit tones with notes of lemongrass, papaya, honeydew melon, currant, and kiwi. The fruitiness of this coffee is supported by a creamy coconut foundation and overtones of spiced, bittersweet chocolate. It is a very well rounded coffee, showcasing the sweetness of the SL-28 varietal and the complexity of the region. This is the perfect coffee for those who like getting caught in the rain.
