Kiwi, Currant, Ginger Ale
Iriani, Othaya, Nyeri
Gachatha Farmer Cooperative Society supports over 1,100 farmers, each averaging 200 coffee trees. Located near Othaya in Nyeri County, the coop is situated in the foothills of Mt. Kenya, part of the Aberdare mountain range. Tea and coffee are found growing side by side here in the rich, bright orange soil. This highly nutrient rich soil, local varietals, and unique processing methods have made Nyeri coffees exceptionally famous. The Gikanda Coffee Farmer’s Society, a cooperative that includes Gachatha and two other factories, has built a reputation for producing some of the highest quality coffees in their region while paying some of the highest wages to the members. Additionally, as they continue to seek increased production through the assistance of Coffee Management Service’s educational systems, they have adopted many water conservation methods to respond to the lack of water sources in the area. Traditional raised bed drying methods can take up to 15 days due to climate fluctuations. Our experience has shown these extended drying times to increase sweetness and clarity while extending the cup profile of freshly harvested coffee.
Gachatha has incredible complex fruit tones with notes of kiwi and currants with overtones of grapefruit zest and ginger ale. This coffee is undoubtably the most complex and yet approachable coffee our buying team has seen out of Nyeri this year. It is the perfect coffee to pair with the sweet sunshine of these fresh summer days.
