The Ureña family and Spyhouse have been working together for three years through their mill Don Pepe, named for their father. Up to this point, we have exclusively carried Cesar’s coffees, but this year expanded within the family to feature this lot from his brother, Edgar. The Don Pepe mill produces unbelievably clean cherry-dried coffees and it was what first drew us to them. Our Director of Coffee tasted the very first sample they produced three years ago and it blew him away for its clarity. That coffee was the very first coffee we committed to in country. Cesar oversees the mill where he processes cherry for his family and close friends, taking extra care to extend the drying up to three weeks at cooler temperatures to prevent spoilage.

We have consistently found the Ureña family’s cherry-dried lots to be outstanding. They carry all the vibrant fruitiness you would expect of the process, but are incredibly transparent, showing the varietal characteristics with much more clarity and balance.

Edgar Ureña’s cherry-dried lot starts off with flavors of ripe strawberry before developing into notes of milk chocolate, toasted coconut, and almonds. As it cools a sweet banana note comes forward with a soft, creamy body. This coffee has been an annual staff favorite, and we hope you give it the chance to be yours. It is the perfect coffee to sip as you give the classics another spin.
