Don Amado is marked each year by sweet spices and vanilla bean, and those notes are expressed this year in the flavor of root beer barrel hard candies, with an aftertaste just like a classic float. We are tasting more fruit in this year’s harvest—similar to fig jam and traditional banana splits. This coffee has been a favorite of ours each year, and this may be the best we’ve tasted. It is the perfect coffee to purchase for home as it is complex enough to sip throughout the day without fading to the background.

Our relationship with José Amado Fernandez is one of our longest-lasting and most personal. Our Director of Coffee visited Don Amado’s farm on his first sourcing trip and fell in love with the deep berry flavors. The farm had a long history of excellence, including winning first place in the 2010 Cup of Excellence.
After two years, we returned and walked the farm again. José showed us rare avocado trees growing amongst the coffee. The trees filled the air with aromas of anise and had fruit that tasted like vanilla buttercream, flavors both heavily present in his coffee. We were able to sit and laugh together with the five Fernandez brothers in their family’s first home. Even with the language barrier, it was clear that brotherly ribbing drove most of the laughter. It was an incredibly special moment to be invited into such a real moment as we waited for the coffee water to boil on the fire. This coffee has been special to us year after year and this harvest is one of the most memorable.
