For International Coffee Day we will be supporting women coffee producers by donating 10% of sales from this limited offering—from a female-owned farm—to the International Women’s Coffee Alliance.
The Aguilera family owns and operates six coffee farms and a micro-mill. The twelve brothers and sisters do nearly all of the work to maintain their operations, aside from hiring some help during the peak of the harvest to aid in picking. Our Director of Coffee visited them on his first sourcing trip with Spyhouse, and returned this year with Christian, our Owner/Founder, and a retail staff member. We have purchased from the family every year since we began roasting and have featured this very lot in the past. Finca Angelina is owned entirely by the sisters and it is consistently one of their highest-performing farms on the cupping table.
The family was proud to show us their nursery filled with an extensive collection of varietals. Some of these are just beginning to come into production and showing great results. This lot is an isolated harvest of Villa Sarchi, a mutation of Bourbon, that occurred naturally in this valley with higher production and more compact growth. We feel that honey-processing is the best compliment for this varietal’s natural characteristics.
Finca Angelina starts off with a tart fruitiness and delicate floral flavors that remind us of hibiscus. This initial brightness develops into a rich dark chocolate and citrus sweetness, similar to orange liqueur. This coffee has been an annual favorite of ours, and we are proud to feature it for such a great cause. It is the perfect coffee to showcase a consistently outstanding group of women producers.
