Balthazar Ramirez has a range of softer fruit tones with a subtle spice that adds complexity. Prominent flavors remind us of guava, passionfruit, complex citrus, cherry cordials, and snickerdoodle cookies. This coffee is a beautiful success story of hard work and communities working together. It is the perfect coffee to lead you filled with hope into the new year.

Balthazar Ramirez’s story gives us so much hope for the future. Just last year he had no option but to sell to traveling buyers called “cayotes,” paying minimum prices to producers. This year, his first as a member of the CODECH (Coordinadora de Organizaciones de Desarrollo de Concepcion Huista), he placed fourth overall in the cooperative competition and had one of the most unique coffees we have ever seen. His coffee had wide-ranging fruit flavors with deeply complex citrus notes. Interestingly, we found that he grows many of these intermixed with his coffee trees. It is in no way an overstatement to say this accomplishment has been life changing.
We found this coffee by joining one of our importers, Atlas, while judging the annual producer competition they created with CODECH. Any producer placing in the top ten receives a bonus premium per pound that they produce. This competition has led to significant overall quality improvements each year. Three years ago, Balthazar returned to his family farm and immediately began the process of transitioning the farm to organic standards, allowing his family to join the cooperative. In his first year of eligibility, he has claimed one of the top spots. We anxiously look forward to seeing how far this story can go.
