Spyhouse Coffee is thrilled to bring you yet another offering from Higa Coffee, friends and partners in several of our most recent releases (Rugali / Rwanda and Kilimbi / Rwanda). The Businde washing station resides in the high altitudes and fertile soils of the Kayanza District in Burundi’s Northern Province, bordering Rwanda. This lot was chosen by Businde and named after the specific hill, Masasu, that showed exceptional quality in regards to the producers and the distinct climate in the area.

As a washing station, it is important to consider the payment of workers who process the cherry as well as the price received by those who cultivate them. Businde has a wide reach of up to 650 local farming families. Businde owner Zuberi Matsitsi provided the smallholder farmers a premium for cherry that was 20% above the local market rate this season. In addition, Businde staff is paid 60% above the rate for casual labor in Burundi. To assist with the dispersing of coffee pulp, Matraco, Zuberi’s company, distributes compost as fertilizer to aid in healthier crops. They also assist local producers by donating seedlings to their farms.

Coffee Bio

We found this lot to be sweet and juicy with fresh white floral aromatics and a medium-bodied mouthfeel the likes of dark sugars. The cup opens with fresh florals of peach blossom and bright, sweet lime. It is supported through the middle by flavors of lightly toasted oolong tea and layers of juicy white nectarine, orange, and apricot. The entire cup is enriched with the complex sweetness of chocolate, fig jam, and butterscotch that finishes with clean and delightful tea-like tannins.
